A two-day seminar on challenges facing female media practitioners has started at the Senior Police Officers Mess, Kingtom..
Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL) organized the programme.
Declaring the seminar opened, the Proprietress of Awareness Times Newspaper, Dr. Sylvia Blyden commended WIMSAL for organizing the seminar as they have a pivotal role to play to ensure that issues concerning women are brought to the forefront. She said topics to be discussed are very important to contemporary Sierra Leone as they will have a positive impact on WIMSAL and also the women.
The President of WIMSAL Doreen Barrie said her organization was borne out of the need to provide opportunities for female journalists adding that opportunities of this nature have been hard to come by.
She described the seminar as important and it will be participatory so that every participant will feel confident to express what she considers as a challenge to her profession.
The President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists Umaru Fofanah also described the theme as the realization of one of the most important issues facing journalism in Sierra Leone.
He said the problems facing women journalists and women in general especially after the war stressing the female journalists are best placed to address these core issue that have affected women.
The Founder and Executive Director of HOPE Sierra Leone John Bangura said his organization is committed to the activities of WIMSAL. He disclosed that WIMSAL will benefit from HOPE Sierra Leone’s Moral foundation for Democracy Programme.
International conferences will be organized while information technology hard and soft ware have designed and paid internet website for WIMSAL worth five thousand dollars established.
The Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Saidata Sesay, said women in the media have started taking their rightful places in the society.
