Is a registered indegeneous organization of young Female Media Practitioners with a clealy defined mission and purpose.

 BACKGROUND: 

WIMSAL was formed in November 2007 by a group of energetic young Female journalists from both the Print and Electronic Media.This organisation is registered with the Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs and an affiliated body to the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ).

 

Mandate

  •  Our mandate is two fold, media related and also a pressure group focusing on the welfare of women
  • To raise the standard of female media practitioners in Sierra Leone to discharge our functions professionally as well as address the issue of inequalities in the profession
  • Also engage government meaningfully to fulfill its responsibilities in society especially the welfare of women.

 

Strategic Focus 

 

  • Embark on awareness raising programmes on issues relating to media and governance
  • Address inequalities with male counterpart in the profession
  • Nurturing constructive relationships with key stakeholders in society
  • Establish partnerships for collaborative approach to issues
  • Strive to maintain a neutral stance in a partisan operating environment to sustain peace in post-conflict Sierra Leone
 
Goals

 

  • To build capacity of members to discharge their functions professionally
  • To engage meaningfully with government to improve society and fulfillment of responsibilities
  • To maintain our standing in society as a model of good governance
  • To change perception of the public about female media practitioners

Membership
 
WIMSAL has a rapidly growing membership. Since its inception two years ago, it has attracted quality membership all over the country as follows:

 

  • Western Area- sixty
  • Northern Region- sixteen
  • Southern Region- twenty-two
  • Eastern Region-fourteen

 

OUR MISSION:

Our mission is to organize all Female Media Practitioners in Sierra Leone under one unified umbrella to raise our voices, research and publish, dialog, come with innovative ideas and solutions on all burning issues affecting female journalism in a male dominated profession.

Moreover, we strongly believe that, Journalism based on ethics and morals had long been undermined and destroyed. So WIMSAL's mission is to rebuild and reintegrate strong moral values that underlie a free and democratic society into the Journalistic profession in our post war country.
